SwordRaiserUniversum have exploded
onto the Australian extreme metal scene with a massive debut release titled
'Leto Destinatus'. Hard to imagine that such a quality album is now in
circulation, considering this band has only been in operation for such a small
time. The touring front has been no exception, allowing the band to see the
cities of their homeland, playing (after being hand picked by the band
themselves) with the UK's powermetal elitists Dragonforce. But more about the
album...Lending itself to the
best of European heavy music, the full length Leto Destinatus also captures the
intensity of American modern metal, all the while maintaining a sound of its
own. Although the production values are world class, courtesy of Sweden's Jens
Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork), even a less polished album would dazzle the senses
with the 13 anthems (51 minutes) that are found on the disc. The twin guitar approach
works great, sitting strong in the mix, with equally complimentary vocal
aggression and diversity. The drums and bass provide a smashing backbone, graced
with the subtle but emotion filled keys. This album has riffs in spades, the
songs of which you will be happy to rotate time after time. From the rocky 'War
of Ages' through to the darker edged 'Day of Redemption' and the two minute
blitzer 'Damage', the band seem to have all bases covered.Lyrically, the album is
just as potent, delving into themes such as personal struggle, war and
Armageddon. A weak, almost after thought for some acts, the written content of
this group displays an equal amount of skill and thoroughness to the music it
intertwines with.Of the many CDs that pass
through, Leto Destinatus was a pleasant surprise, compelling me to pursue
Australian metal further to see what other gems may lay out there. These guys
and girl are definitely going to make waves (no doubt already in their home
country) but also on the international stage. A follow up will be eagerly
anticipated.An impressive piece of
work from these Australian metallers Universum, Leto Destinatus will make a fine
addition to your collection so be sure to grab yourself a
copy!Metal
