One of the positives of epicmetal.net that we always
discover new labels and new bands and especially we travel with alternative
heavy metal tunes . the folk and viking
metal style is one of those which impressed me. Most of the bands of
this style are quite impressive. Especially this one Oakenshield - with their album Gylfaginning. That was the means to
discover a new favourite label the Einheit-Produktionen
Oakenshield were formed in 2004 as a studio project of Ben Corkhill with the name Nifelhel where the band had a more brutal music
style. After a few self releases ben resolved and created Oakenshield which
after a demo they releasing their first full release.
This band plays folk/Viking metal with
major Epic Metal characteristics. The
album contains 11 folk metal songs each
one with its own distinctive features and all well played. With heavy folk
riffs and great vocals !! this album is one of those
which you either love or hate – we liked what we listen to !!! the guitars do what they are supposed to do
playing heavy and in sometimes melodic riffs.
However there are some negatives such as
the drums (they seem liked they are through a drum machine) . This a point
which oakenshield could improve .
additionally I did not listen any creative instuments and especially the use of
them would have been beneficial for oakenfield and make them differentiate from
the bulk of folk metal bands that exist now .
In summary oakenfield have the talent and
produced a good album - I personally
believe that with some more attention to details the album could have been
better (real drums – traditional instruments etc). this is another band which has a strong future potential and I have no doubts that their
next releases will be even better. All of you fans of folk/Viking metal do your
selves a favour and add this album to your album collection – you support a
great band on its beginning and an excellent label Einheit-Produktionen
